LEMB project
From its beginnings around 1958, the Luis Ángel Arango Library has been involved in activities
that seek to improve cataloging, as well as information normalization from different perspectives
such as: personal and corporate authors, uniform titles, and geographical names.
In 1986, the library acquired the NOTIS system, with the purpose of automating all its functions and
services. Later on, it incorporated the LEMB database (in Spanish, List of Subject Headings for
Libraries), which first edition was prepared by the Colombian Institute for the Promotion of Higher
Education, ICFES, in 1985, and was later converted to MARC/NOTIS format by Chile's
Bibliographical Information Network, RENIB.
From that point on, the library has been constantly working on updating the List of Subject Headings
for Libraries, LEMB, through a committee integrated by post secondary libraries such as Los Andes
University, the Communications Faculty at Javeriana University, and Jorge Tadeo Lozano
University, among others. As a result of this collaboration, a third Edition of the LEMB List has been
produced, as well as a fourth edition in digital format.
Digital LEMB is an electronic tool that makes agile the
processes of cataloguing and classification of
documentary material and incorporates a modern search
system of the terms accepted as subject headings.
The Subject Headings List handled by Digital LEMB, is composed of a standardized
language that covers all the knowledge areas, consisting of principles that are
worldwide accepted, and that allows a controlled vocabulary in order to analyze and
recover information. Thus, the main purpose of this list is to establish standardized
subject headings, that are capable of becoming a reliable tool for the cataloguing of
materials, the conformation and construction of modules of authorities in MARC
format and a precise source in the access of public catalogues.
